Floating Pizza
Gratitude with extra cheese
Hi Lovely One,
I’m lying on a hill, watching the clouds drift lazily across a gray watercolor sky. Sometimes I live in the zone of literal life and sometimes in one of my paintings. Lately I’ve preferred my paintings; there I get to be the brush instead of the blur, the paint instead of the pain so I am the one in charge of what shows up. This works for me because most days my emotions seem to be written by a committee of small, bickering squirrels or by the wind delivering all the noise of the world like a riot might sound when heard across a lake.
Today, the world feels blurry at the edges, the sky is about to cry. Enter a piece of pizza comes cruising across my view, suspended from a bunch of balloons, the sort you’d see at a kid’s party or a clown’s unplanned midlife crisis. I blink. Once. Twice … and think, either I’m hallucinating or pizza! just what I need … with a glass of Cabernet.
Then I start to laugh because 1) I don’t drink wine, and 2) maybe it doesn’t matter which.
Maybe the world keeps slipping us strange gifts when we let go of trying so hard to make sense of it, when we allow balloon-tethered pizza, conversation that tilts toward grace, and … imagination. The hill, the sky, the impossible slice, it’s a temporary truce between chaos and curiosity.
Maybe that’s how gratitude sneaks in, quietly disguised as wonder with tomato sauce on its white blouse.
I am oddly at peace with not knowing where the pizza came from although if it’s someone surreptitiously attaching favorite food to balloons, I’d like to order some See’s chocolate to float by (dark chocolate covered almonds, please). The cool thing is, I know where to find these things in real life. Gotta go.
For extra credit:
Close your eyes and imagine a delightful visitor floating across your inner sky: something delicious, kind, or inspiring gratitude. Let it hover there. What message might it bring if you stopped trying to translate it? Or maybe just the thought is enough to supply a welcomed shift.
Warm wishes,
Jill

Skies are gray here today with snow still on the ground. But if I close my eyes I fast forward to my first Springtime here in our new home… blue skies, woods and hills all around. The deer will come close to welcome their new neighbors. 🐾💖
I’ve been making mozzarella and ricotta with my extra milk. It would make fine toppings for your floating pizza.🎈
