Wonderful story! Reminded me of sitting on the kitchen table while my Mom, mixed her ingredients and baked, told me stories, and assuaged my childhood ,tears. She was an excellent baker...esp. pies. My brother would not marry his wife, of now 50 years, until she could make a pie like Mom. Food for the soul comes in so many forms: stories told to a child while watching miracles take shape as muffins, pies and the like. How lucky we are to have people like Hattie, and my Mom, to nuture us.
