“Art doesn’t erase anything,” she says. “It just gives the mind a place to rest that isn’t on fire."

Thank you, Jill, for guiding me through this painting. I glanced at it in passing as the red lured me in and took the last remaining energy left from digging errant grass from the garden. Who needs headlines when Nature is invading the few cultivated spaces in my world. That sounds stupid, I know, when so much is collapsing around us, your headlines and my weeds, haunting our troubled spaces. Thank you, Henry, for the red, and the blue vines creeping up the linen and wallpaper, for the cloud trees, and thank you, Henry and Jill, for Zelda and her (your) wisdom.

Does not sound stupid, Sue. Sounds right. Art is our building when so much is collapsing around us. It does feel haunted right now.

Your storytelling of your relationship with the red painting drew me right in - I was there with you and Zelda! Reminded me of how I miss going to art museums, but don't miss the guards... Part of how I remain part of the creative positive, in contrast to the airwaves and other waves of constant negativity, is I find myself dressing in brighter colors at age 70 than ever before! Especially reds, bright pinks, bright yellows, and bright greens - bright oranges too. and I mix and match (or don't match) these colors as well for fun and play! :-)

I love this! Having been cautioned more than once by museum guards I always relate to the experience. And your work with creating the scene with words is magical! Thank you! 😊

I was listening to this discussion on the radio (on PBS station) about how children perceive the world with their whole being and can literally try to enter a piece of art, ignoring ropes and museum guards, and fully engaging in their experiences of imagination. I want to be there..

I'd love to hear that story. I'll look for it.

Thanks, Christine, as always.

My darling Jill. How did you know I needed this exact message from you today? It is beautiful and so necessary. That is one of my favorite Matisse paintings. Thank you thank you thank you.💜

Thanks for the note, Jean. I need it too.

That print hung in my kitchen for three years and it brought me so much joy every time I went into that room to cook or hang out. When I moved, I wasn’t able to take it with me so it is in storage. All my prints and some original work are in storage. They’ve been in storage for years and it breaks my heart, but that’s what happens sometimes. I can’t bear to give them up. 💜

Your posts help me remain sane and grounded despite the rampant chaos. Thank you for that.

I escaped to my gardens this morning, followed by some alone time to process my thoughts and real feelings in my office.

Rampant chaos is a good description. Hard not to let it get to us but gardens and art and allowing real feelings is wise. Hang in there, Patty.

Oh Jill! I can't tell you how perfectly this fit into my mood today. It's one of the best things that I have read in a long time, except maybe my recent passion for learning about the fascinating history of Brittany, France. Thank you so much. How did you know this is exactly what I needed today?

jill badonsky's avatar

I needed it too. Thank you for the kind words.

Trippy how Matisse was so exacting with the chair but went wacky with the tablecloth running up the wall. I don't see an edge to that table either. It's a dream world in there, and you enter and exit easily. No guard can stop you.
